#RaiseACup
Global Bookkeeping Week 2018
Well it’s an exciting week for bookkeepers
globally and we are loving the theme this year - #RaiseACup!

This year marks the fourth annual
Global Bookkeeping Week. The aim of this
initiative is to communicate with small businesses the value in engaging in bookkeeping
services, and to celebrate the bookkeeping journey and its advancement over the
past years.
This year the
Institute of Certfied Bookkeepers aims to not only celebrate bookkeepers and
bookkeeping services, but also to eliminate the misconception that the bookkeeping industry is becoming obsolete. We are living in a digital world today and with so many of
our activities, accounts, habits, jobs becoming online, it’s common for small business
owners and individuals to think that it’s all ‘easier’. This is not the case
with bookkeeping.
So what is
bookkeeping? What does a bookkeeper do differently? A good bookkeeper will be an organisational
King or Queen! They will organise all of the financial record-keeping (including
sorting through receipts and paperwork) that you may not have the time,
patience or knowledge to do properly. They can also provide insight into
potential financial issues in the business. A good bookkeeper is a huge asset!
It’s true, bookkeeping
software such as Xero, MYOB and QBO for bookkeeping do make the process a whole
lot easier; and with the introduction of Receipt Bank comes the possibility for
paperless paperwork! However, mistakes can be made, often costing businesses
time and money. We have explored some of the common mistakes in our bookkeeping
basics webinar here and blog post here. These include the potential perils of
double entry bookkeeping and lodging BAS. They are worth watching out for, especially
if you’re practising small business bookkeeping!
Matthew Addison, ICB Executive Chairman sums up the bookkeeping industry
and the purpose of this week perfectly:
"Global Bookkeeping Week serves to acknowledge and celebrate the work of good
bookkeeping. Whether your bookkeeper is yourself, on your team or a contracted
professional; good bookkeeping is at the core of every good business. Good
bookkeeping anticipates business needs and implements the most efficient
technology and business solutions best suited for that business.”

The anticipation of your business needs is our point of difference – we
have experience and a keen awareness in assisting small businesses using a
method best matched to that industry. This could include recommending
bookkeeping software to suit the business, or in Shoebox’s case, tailoring a
package that serves their needs at a fixed price.
This year the
ICB lined up a fantastic week of events to bring bookkeepers together,
demonstrating the global presence and significance of this progressive
community. Events included a Global webinar covering practice management,
social storytelling and technical bookkeeping support, free networking meetings
for bookkeepers and business owners to discover the support and benefits of these
meetings.
Our
Shoebox team has been raising a cup every day this week (tea, coffee, water,
wine!) to raise a voice for the bookkeeping community and its integral role in
small business success. Thanks to the Institute of
Certified Bookkeepers for running this week for a fourth year – we can’t wait
to see what next year has in store for us bookkeepers!
